Visma Nmbrs & Pride: from 7 days to 365 days per year

Yay! Pride week started this Saturday on the 30th of July. That means that this week we are supporting the LGBTQIA+ community a bit more than we usually do. We’d like to take this special moment to take you along with our thoughts, the way Visma Nmbrs supports the community and what it means to be an ally! (And how you can become one too).

Let’s talk

On the subject of being supportive you can only be honest and straightforward from our point of view. We do not claim at all that we are a star student example on how to be inclusive and how to offer the best possible support to (employees in) the community, yet! We are also still learning and we are eager to do our best to make sure everyone feels happy, supported and included. As you should feel, always.

You may have questions or insecurities
about how to converse in a topic linked to LGBTQIA+,
especially when you are not yet familiar with the topic.

Let’s shout!
To speak our minds, it can be quite complicated. You may have questions or insecurities about how to converse in a topic linked to LGBTQIA+, especially when you are not familiar with the topic. Sometimes (also many times) that’s the reason why the topic is avoided.

Hence why we are trying to break open the conversation, write about it and maybe inspire others to give it a thought as well. A first step is to be an ally and we’d like to introduce the term to more people. This way everyone can be active in sharing information and educate each other to set a different mindset and switch that button ON! Switching the mindset to think more inclusive and embracing to everyone.

An ally is someone who supports,
encourages and stands up for the people around them.

Allies
If you haven't heard of the term before, we are happy to explain it to you. An ally is someone who supports, encourages and stands up for the people around them. The term ‘Ally’ is used a lot in the LGBTQIA+ community and refers in this case to someone who is heterosexual and/or cisgender. This person tries to make the world a better place for the people who identify as LGBTQIA+. Maybe you recognise yourself in this too. If so, in the illustration there are some tips on how you can be a good ally.

As an ally of the LGBTQIA+ community we try our best to show our family, friends, colleagues, customers and the world that we care. If you want to learn more about what Visma Nmbrs already has done, such as being more mindful in our internal communication or through our visual communication externally, you can read it next Thursday (4th of August) in our brand new blog:  ‘how to make your employees feel more welcome in the workplace.’

Educate yourself
On the Pride website you can learn more about the Pride this year in the Netherlands. If you want to learn more about the LGBTQIA+ community, the website of the University of Chapel Hill is very helpful. There are also many forums online where you can learn a lot about the important issues that are currently present in the community.
