Thirteenth month

The thirteenth month, or year-end bonus, is a bonus that some employees receive from their employer.

When you select the thirteenth month, you will therefore see that the estimated annual income changes. This usually has no effect on your holiday allowance, but it is possible that your estimated annual income just exceeds a threshold, causing your holiday allowance to be taxed at a different special rate.

Extra bonusses in box 1

The payroll tax on your holiday allowance depends on your total annual income. The special rate is determined based on your estimated annual income (your income from Box 1).

If you enter an amount in this field, you will see that the amount is added to the estimated annual income. This does not necessarily change anything, but it may mean that your estimated annual income just exceeds a threshold, causing the special rate to change.

Holiday allowance calculator

Easily calculate your holiday allowance based on your gross salary. With this tool, you immediately receive an estimate based on your salary and the approximate annual income associated with it. This way, you know how much net holiday allowance you can expect. Please note: This is an estimate; your salary usually changes throughout the year, which this tool does not take into account.

In the tool, you can indicate whether you receive a thirteenth month or other bonuses in addition to your salary. This can affect the amount of your annual income, and consequently the special tax rate at which holiday allowance is taxed.

Is the net holiday allowance disappointing after calculation?

That is not surprising. Your holiday allowance is paid at a higher rate than your normal salary. This is because bonuses on top of your regular salary are paid at against a special rate for the top of your income.

Holiday allowance is a legal right in The Netherlands

Holiday allowancce is not a casual gift from your employer, it's a legal right. As an employee, you accrue holiday allowance every month, usually 8% of your gross monthly salary. This means that your employer actually sets aside a portion of your salary every month. In May, you then receive the accrued amount from the past year paid out in a single lump sum.

Tax on your holiday allowance

When do you receive your holiday allowance?

Most employers pay out holiday allowance in May or June, but this can vary by company. You can find the exact payment date in your employment contract or collective labour agreement. On your payslip, you can see how much holiday allowance you accrue each month under 'reservations' or 'accrued holiday allowance'. Handy to keep an eye on! In the month of payment, the total amount appears as a separate line on your payslip, often under 'special remuneration' or 'holiday allowance'. Of course, it doesn't hurt to double-check your holiday allowance with our tool. Mistakes can always slip in, especially if your employer doesn't use payroll software. In our 'payslip explained', we dive deeper into all the terms on your payslip.

Different ways of paying the holiday allowance in The Netherlands

Not everyone receives their holiday allowance in the same way. Some employers choose to pay out holiday allowance monthly. You then receive a small amount extra on your payslip every month. Other employers stick to the traditional May payment. There is no right or wrong – both methods have their advantages. With monthly payment, you have immediate access to your money, whereas an annual payment feels like a nice little extra to look forward to.
