Software Development Manager

As Software Development Manager, you hold a pivotal people-first role within our development organization, reporting directly to the CTO. Rather than writing code or architecting systems, your mission is to support the people who do - leading a diverse group of 10–15 engineers as a dedicated coach. Together with your team, you build a thriving engineering culture that blends hard and soft skills. And you don't stop at day-to-day coaching: you look for ways to remove friction and help the team work smarter, including with AI.

Time to grow. Time to thrive.

We are Nmbrs. We build smart business software that removes unnecessary complexity for SMEs and the professionals who support them. Nmbrs brings together four established product organisations - Payroll, Accounting, Invoicing and Reporting - with teams across the Netherlands, Sweden and Portugal.

We are one brand with a shared ambition, while continuing to work from the expertise and strengths of our individual organisations. We join forces where it makes sense, while keeping teams, expertise and decision-making close together.

For this role, you'll join Nmbrs Accounting in Rotterdam, working closely with the colleagues in your local team while being part of the wider Nmbrs organisation.

Your role

As Software Development Manager, you're a valued member of our development team, holding a pivotal people-first position and reporting directly to the CTO. Unlike a traditional Tech Lead, your mission isn't to write code or architect systems - it's to support the people who do.

You lead a diverse group of 10–15 FTEs (e.g. front-end developers, QA, and more), acting as a dedicated coach to foster a thriving engineering culture that blends hard and soft skills.

In practice, you will:

  • Mentor & manage performance: Provide day-to-day mentorship and performance management for your group of engineers, tailoring your approach to each role — a QA specialist needs different coaching than a developer.

  • Optimize Developer Experience (DX): Take a proactive role in reviewing and refining our software engineering processes to remove friction and make our developers' lives easier.

  • Drive innovation as an AI evangelist: Act as a key advocate for AI and agentic-supported coding, helping the team embrace and integrate modern tools to work smarter.

  • Bridge strategy and execution: Keep a keen eye on the overall roadmap and planning, working across teams to spot (in)efficiencies and ensure our engineering engine runs smoothly.

  • Cultivate visibility: Support developers in improving their communication and "internal brand," ensuring their hard work is recognized and aligned with the company's goals.

Your impact

Your work determines whether our engineers can do their best work, not just their busiest work. When you remove friction from a process or coach someone through a tough performance conversation, it's the reason a developer stays focused on solving real problems instead of fighting the system around them. When you help the team adopt AI-driven tools well, it's the difference between a slow, incremental improvement and a genuine step-change in how fast we ship.

You're also shaping how engineering leadership works at Nmbrs Accounting: reporting directly to the CTO, your read on the roadmap, team efficiency, and culture directly influences how the wider engineering organization performs and feels to work in.

You bring

You're likely a former Developer or Technical Team Lead who made the conscious, passionate choice to step into people management. You know that managing a QA specialist requires a different approach than coaching a developer.

  • Proven experience mentoring and managing people in diverse technical roles (e.g. QA, front-end, back-end).

  • A solid grasp of the .NET ecosystem and various frontend frameworks (Vue.js, React, etc.) - you won't be coding, but you speak the team's language.

  • A conceptual understanding of AWS infrastructure and Azure DevOps pipelines, so you understand your team's blockers.

  • Openness to AI-driven development tools and modern methodologies that support and empower your developers' daily work.

  • Professional proficiency in English, spoken and written.
