Data Engineer

As Data Engineer, you build the data foundation that lets Nmbrs Accounting move faster and make smarter decisions. You turn scattered, high-volume data into reliable pipelines and a well-structured data warehouse, using your expertise in ETL design and cloud data platforms. Together with our Data Scientist and product teams, you turn raw data into features, insights, and decisions people can actually trust. And you don't just keep the pipes running: you look for ways to push our data and AI capabilities further.

Time to grow. Time to thrive.

We are Nmbrs. We build smart business software that removes unnecessary complexity for SMEs and the professionals who support them. Nmbrs brings together four established product organisations- Payroll, Accounting, Invoicing and Reporting -with teams across the Netherlands, Sweden and Portugal.

We are one brand with a shared ambition, while continuing to work from the expertise and strengths of our individual organisations. We join forces where it makes sense, while keeping teams, expertise and decision-making close together.

For this role, you'll join Nmbrs Accounting in Rotterdam, working closely with the colleagues in your local team while being part of the wider Nmbrs organisation.

Your role

As part of our (F)innovation Team, you're the driving force behind how we collect, structure, and use data across our product and business. As Data Engineer, you build and maintain the pipelines and data infrastructure that turn raw, high-volume data into something teams can actually build on. You work closely with our Data Scientist, product teams, and business stakeholders, and are responsible for our data strategy end-to-end - from source system to warehouse to feature.

In practice, you will:

  • Define and drive our data strategy, as the person who owns how data is collected, structured, and used across the organisation - shaping the roadmap, not just executing someone else's.

  • Build and maintain robust ETL pipelines that reliably move large, continuous volumes of data from our source systems into our data warehouse.

  • Team up with our Data Scientist on rapid prototyping — testing ideas quickly, learning fast from what doesn't work, and turning promising experiments into production-ready features.

  • Work closely with multidisciplinary product and engineering teams to translate business questions into data solutions that support day-to-day decisions.

  • Help colleagues across the business get more comfortable working with data — running workshops and translating technical concepts into language non-technical stakeholders can act on.

Your impact

Your work is what makes data-driven decision-making possible at Nmbrs - for the product teams building new features, and for the business teams relying on accurate reporting. When you build a reliable pipeline, a data scientist can trust the numbers behind a new AI feature instead of second-guessing them. When you design a clean data warehouse, colleagues across the business can answer their own questions instead of waiting on you.

You're also helping shape where we're headed next: your work on data infrastructure feeds directly into the AI features we bring to customers - the difference between an idea and something that actually ships responsibly and reliably.

You bring

You bring solid engineering fundamentals in data and a genuine curiosity for turning messy data into something usable. You're comfortable owning a domain end-to-end, and you enjoy explaining technical decisions to people who aren't engineers.

  • A background in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field, plus at least 2 years of hands-on experience with MSSQL.

  • At least 2 years building and maintaining ETL pipelines from scratch, and 2+ years of experience with data warehousing (Snowflake experience is a strong plus).

  • Familiarity with .NET/C#, Databricks, or AWS is a bonus, as is experience with database-per-tenant architectures.

  • Fluent in English, spoken and written - you'll regularly explain technical topics to non-technical colleagues.

  • Strong communication skills and a genuine passion for innovation - you're energised by trying new things, learning fast when they don't work, and sharing what you learn with the rest of the team.
